1IntroductionTheCOVID-19pandemicbroughtaboutdrasticchangesinthewaypeopleinteractedatwork,inpublic,andatschools.Inordertomitigatethespreadofthevirus,universitiesswitchedfromface-to-faceclassestoadistance-learningmodel.Thismovetoonlinechangedthewayteachersandstudentsapproachedlearning.Teachershadtoreconfigureface-to-facecoursesinawaythatwouldbeaccessibleonline,andstudentshadtolearnhowtodealwithbeingphysicallyisolatedfromtheirpeers.Astheseverityofthepandemicbegantowane,schoolsbegantoreopentheirclassroomsandstudentsreturnedtocampus.However,thisreturntoschoolhasnotnecessarilycoincidedwithareturntonormalcy.Thisstudyfocusesonthechallengesinre-adaptingtoface-to-facelessons,bybothteachersandstudents,inarequiredgeneralEnglishcourseforengineeringstudentsataJapaneseuniversity.2BeforeCOVID-19Beforediscussingthechallengesofthetransitionfromremotelearningbacktoface-to-facelearning,itisimportanttounderstandhowandwhythecoursewasdesignedinthepre-pandemicera.Thecoursewascreatedin2014to―53―*1SeniorAssistantProfessor,LanguageProgram(English),SchoolofGeneralEducation,ChubuUniversity*2Professor,LanguageProgram(English),SchoolofGeneralEducation,ChubuUniversityBacktotheClassroom:bringinglessonslearnedfromdistancelearningbackintotheblended-learningclassroomALLEND.Patrick*1andOGURISeiko*2AbstractTheCOVID-19Pandemicrequiredmanycoursestomigratefromface-to-facelearningtoaremotelearningmodel.ThisstudyfollowsageneralEnglishcurriculumforroboticmajorsatChubuUniversityanddetailsthewayitchangedfromface-to-faceclassroomstodistancelearningandbackagain.Thefocusofthestudyisnotonlyonhowthecurriculumchangedandadaptedtofacenewchallenges,butwhatlessonswerelearnedduringthechanges.Itexplorestheeffectschangesincurriculumhavehadonthestudentsinthesecondyearprogramin2022,whojusttookthecourseremotelyintheirfreshmanyearandjustfinishedtheirfirstsemesterofface-to-faceinstruction.ThestudyaddressesboththeirperceptionofthecourseasawholeandtheirmotivationinEnglishlearning.Thestudyaimstoserveasasmallcasestudyinhowteachersandstudentscanadapttounexpectedchangesinmethodsofstudyandhighlightboththegradualandnon-linearnatureofthelanguagelearningprocess.Finally,theexperiencesemphasizetheimportanceofflexibilityandpatiencewhenitcomestoEnglishlanguagepedagogy.Keywordsblendedlearning,remotelearning,motivation,teacherroles,coursedesign
