First,teachershadtorepeatthesamesetofinstructionsorexplanationstoeachoftheroughly90studentsintheclassatthebeginningofeachconversation,reducingtheamountoftimeeachstudenthadforlanguageuse.Also,studentsthathadnoZoomappointmentwerelessproductiveastheywouldlosesightoftheirgoalsbetweensessions.Moreover,studentsinearliergroupswereabletosharedetailsoftheinterviewcontents,allowinglatergroupstobeabletobetterprepareandgivingthemanadvantageovertheearliergroups.Finally,severalstudentswereobservedtobeabitanxiousaboutmeetingwiththeinstructoralone.Inordertoaddresstheseissues,theZoomsessionswerechangedfromindividualconversationstogroupconversations(figure7).TheENTwouldstillspeaktostudentsoneatatime,butstudentscouldlistenandlearnfromtheirpeersaswellasmakecommentsorreacttotheirpeers’dialogues.Furthermore,theJNTwouldprovidelanguagetips,vocabularyhints,andgiveextraculturalinformationinthechattohelpfacilitatethestudentsastheyspoke.Thisformathelpedbuildastrongersinceofcommunityintheclassandalsoallowedformoreopportunitiestomeetduringthesemester,increasingfromonly2sessionsin2020to6sessionsinthespringof2021and7inthefall.Althoughmoresessionscouldhavebeenadded,itwasbelievedthatkeepingsmallergroupswouldimprovethequalityofeachsession.Overall,theremotelearningclassesof2020and2021weremostlysuccessfulinmeetingmostofthecurriculumgoals.IntermsofattitudestowardlearningEnglish,99%(n=84)ofthesophomoreclassof2021indicatedapositivechangeintheirattitudetowardEnglishlearning.Inaddition,theiroverallproficiencywithEnglishshowedanoverallincreaseovertheirtwoyearsofremotestudyinthecourseasevidencedbytheirComputerAdaptedEnglishProficiencyTest(CASEC)scoresasseeninfigure8.4BacktotheClassroom4.1AdifferentclassroomStudentshavereturnedbacktoface-to-faceforthiscoursestartinginthespringsemesterof2022.Thisalsomarkedareturntotheoriginalcurriculumdesignusedbeforethepandemic,albeitwithseveralrestrictionsonwhatactivitiescanbedoneduetoprecautionsagainstCOVID-19.Beforethepandemic,groupworkwasalargepartofthecurriculum,butsocialdistancingrequirementsmakeitmoredifficulttoputstudentsingroupswhilemaintainingasafedistancewithlimitedspaceintheclassroom.Inaddition,studentsareencouragedtonotmovearoundtheclassroomasmuch,sominglingandrelayactivitiesarenoteasilyutilized.TheuseoffacemasksalsopreventsstudentsfrombeingabletoseemouthmovementduringspeechandmakesitabitmoredifficultforquieterspeakersJournalofChubuUniversityEducationNo.22(2022)―56―Figure7:IndividualZoominterview(Oguri&Allen,2021)Figure8:Classof2020CASECscores(Allen&Oguri,2022)Figure6:IndividualZoominterview(Oguri&Allen,2021)0%10%20%30%40%50%60%70%80%90%100% 2020 Oct2021 Jan2022 Jan272018161616293437133B 600-759C 450-599D 390-449E 0-389
