中部大学教育研究No.24(2024)―54―JournalofChubuUniversityEducationNo.24(2024)ThePuzzle-BasedLiberalArtsCourse:OutcomesandChallengesfromThreeYearsofClassroomPracticeTERAIHajime*1andKATOYoshitaka*2*1Professor,LanguageEducationProgram(Japanese),SchoolofGeneralEducation,ChubuUniversity*2Part-timeLecturer,LanguageEducationProgram(English),SchoolofGeneralEducation,ChubuUniversity;AssociateProfessor,DepartmentofBritishandAmericanStudies,SchoolofForeignStudies,NagoyaUniversityofForeignStudiesAbstractIn2024,ChubuUniversityofficiallylaunchedacoursecalledthe"LiberalArtsForum."Priortotheestablishmentofthiscourse,severaltrialclasseswereconductedoveraperiodofthreeyears,startingin2021.Thispaperreportsontheoutcomesandchallengesofthe"LiberalArtsForum(LanguageandEducation)"course,whichwasledbytheauthors.Akeyfeatureofthiscoursewasthateachstudentsettheirown"puzzle"relatedtolanguageandeducationandexploreditwhilesharingtheirthoughtswithothers.Thisapproachwasadoptedbasedonthebeliefthatarticulatingpuzzlesandunderstandingone'senvironmentthroughdialoguewithothersalignswiththegoalsofliberalartseducation.Thecoursewasstructuredaroundtheexplorationofpuzzles,posterpresentations,andessaywriting.Throughthreeyearsofpractice,weidentifiedchallengessuchashowtohelpstudentsacquiretheknowledgeneededtosetandexploretheirpuzzles,andhowtofostercollaborationamongstudentsandteachers.Keywordsliberalarts,course,puzzle,posterpresentation,essaywriting
