The Research Institute for Biological Function was established in April 2000 as a biotechnology research center. By developing and using various functions possessed by living organisms, the Institute has implemented various kinds of research projects solving different issues facing human beings relating to the environment, food and health, . The results of these research projects have been published in the Institute’s journal and have served as the basis for planning larger-scale research projects. “Functional Foods Science,” one of the affiliated departments of the Research Institute for Biological Function, was established in 2005 as a research department endowed by Erina Co., Inc. It is dedicated to elucidating the functionality and efficacy of food ingredients scientifically, and is engaged in research and education to disseminate information widely to the public.
