Chubu Institute for Advanced Studies

Expansion of interdisciplinary research aiming to reconstruct disciplinary frameworks to ensure a sustainable society

Chubu Institute for Advanced Studies

The Chubu Institute for Advanced Studies (CIAS) was established in 1996 as a laboratory for common use for university students regardless of their major, with the aim of reconstructing disciplinary frameworks beyond the boundaries of individual disciplines. It has two affiliated centers: the International ESD Center, which was established in 2009 to promote “education for sustainable development (ESD)” as a centerpiece of the objectives of the Institute, and the International GIS Center, which was established in 2011 to integrate research with geographic information systems (GIS) as a tool common to all disciplines. The latter was designated by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) in 2014 as the International Digital Earth Applied Science Research Center (IDEAS). Recognizing that “sustainable development” will be a fundamental value in the future human society, the CIAS is pursuing research activities that serve as the foundation of sustainable development.
