小説や映画のなかで描かれている登場人物の心情、時代背景、文化、そして物語の展開を分析します。1冊すべてを読むのは大変ですので有名な場面や重要な出来事を抜粋して細かく見ていきます。まずは英単語の意味を確認し、「文体」と呼ばれる文章の書き方にも注目して精読します。結末に至るまでにさまざまな伏線が張られていることがあります。一緒に謎解きをする感覚で小説の読解を行います。
応用言語学
人が母国語や外国語を学ぶ仕組みについて学びます。例えば「年を取ると言語学習は難しくなるの？」「どんな学習法が効果的なの？」などの問題の答えを、最新の研究知見をもとに探っていきます。最終目標は、自分の英語学習に活かせる知識を身につけることです。ペアワークなど学生主体の活動が多いのが、この授業の特徴です。
英語で学ぶアメリカ事情
In this course, students learn about the government of the United States of America, how a president is elected, and how laws are passed. They also learn about various holidays in the U.S. and how Americans celebrate them. This includes holidays you may be familiar with like Halloween and Christmas, but some you may not know anything about like Juneteenth and Veterans Day. In addition, each week students are tasked with watching a news program and answering questions about what they have watched. By the end of this course, students will have gained a better understanding of the U.S.
英語で学ぶ言語習得論
This is an American-style lecture class on the topic of language acquisition. Throughout the year, we learn about how people acquire their first and second languages through the lenses of linguistics, psychology, and sociology. It’s a challenging class, using an English-language textbook and lectures in English, supported by group work with classmates in both English and Japanese, where students work together to help each other understand the material. Taking this class will not only help with your academic English skills, but teach you a lot about what language is and how it is learned. It’s a particularly useful class for those who are thinking about careers in teaching.
