Message from Mr. Adam Martinelli, Graduate of the Master’s Program (2021)
English Language and Culture Course
My name is Adam Martinelli. I graduated from Ohio University in 2015 with a B.A. in Linguistics and a minor in Japanese. My experiences working with international students in the United States and studying abroad in Japan inspired me to pursue a career in English language education. Before attending graduate school, however, I wanted to gain practical teaching experience.
To achieve that goal, I taught English in Tokushima Prefecture, Japan, for three years before applying for the Ryozo Ohnishi Graduate Fellowship in 2018. After being awarded the fellowship, I enrolled in the Graduate School of Global Humanics at Chubu University to further my studies in applied linguistics.
Drawing on my own experiences, I became interested in the fact that many former study-abroad students seemed to lose much of their language proficiency after returning home and entering careers unrelated to foreign languages. This led me to focus my research not on language acquisition during study abroad, but on language attrition after students return home. By collaborating with students and faculty involved in Chubu University’s study abroad program at Ohio University, I successfully completed my master’s thesis and graduated from Chubu University in 2021.
Shortly after graduation, I returned to Chubu University—this time as an English instructor. Today, I continue to apply the knowledge and experiences I have gained throughout my academic and professional journey to help the next generation of students make the most of their language-learning experiences.
