    Greeting

Since the beginning of 21st century, human has encountered an aging era, and various changes are occurring in all classes of social life. In particular, super aging society has emerged in Japan, while population decreases drastically. In addition to the emergence of novel infectious diseases, the incidence of malignant neoplasm, dementia, and life-style diseases is increasing worldwide, which increases the number of peoples who need care, causing difficulties in having healthy life and enjoying old age at ease. What are required to do in this situation to protect our health and to enjoy healthy life in both physical and mental aspects? The mission of Research Institute for Life and Health Sciences (RILHS) is considered to study the above-mentioned difficulties and propose new ideas and solutions as scientists. RILHS also regards it as our important mission to foster young researchers and technicians who will contribute to the future life science.

In 2004, RILHS was established to form a research platform for the creation and development of life and health sciences along with the missions as mentioned above. Since then, we have played important roles for the establishment of the Department of Life and Health Sciences and its development in a wide range of research fields to lead up-to-date life science, such as Biomedical Sciences, Health Nursing, Physical/Operation Therapy, Medical Engineering and Primary Preventive Medicine.

The following points shall be taken into consideration as our missions.

    1. To promote creative and advanced basic research as a platform in health sciences.
    2. To provide young researchers for an opportunity and place to learn and communicate together.
    3. To enrich the graduate school and support research and life of graduate students.
    4. To support and collaborate with community activities on health issues.
    5. To promote announcement of research results at Chubu University and returning the profit to society.
    6. To promote communications inside and outside university, and support collaboration with various universities and institutes.
    7. To plan big projects and acquire many research budgets.

As past performance, a Program for the support of Strategic Construction of Research Basis in Private Universities of MEXT entitled “Strategic Research for the Prediction and Prevention of Diseases induced by Life Environmental Factors” was accepted by the ministry of education, culture, sports, science and technology in 2008(Representative: Prof. Yasuo Suzuki), and an independent research center named Health Science Hills was established. In addition, RILHS is promoting a community-based project entitled “regional-university linking system for medical home care”. Furthermore, we have holden “Life Science Forum” as an event to educate students and general public by co-sponsoring with the Research Institute for Development of Biological Functions once a year. We have invited top scientists and introduced up-to-date information in life science to offer a direction for the development of a sustainable health society in the near future.
